Well, it’s officially freezing where I live, which means it’s hot chocolate season! I must confess to an undying love for hot coffee, hot apple cider, hot tea….. And, especially, hot chocolate!
I love it, but I’m scared to drink it! Have you ever read the label of those hot chocolate packages? It’s not for the faint of heart. True story; my eldest was given a package of hot chocolate the other day and came running out to the car with it excitedly. As we were driving home, she sat quietly reading the ingredients. She looked at me in shock and said, “Mom, I can’t even pronounce most of these things!” Later on I found the unopened package in the garbage (proud mom moment).
We’ve almost finished the gigantic can of “non-toxic” hot chocolate that we bought a couple of years ago, and since I can’t find another, we decided to make our own. “How hard can it be,” I thought? “And sampling will be a delightful process.” As I thought, it is unbelievably easy to make your own hot chocolate; plus, you can package it so beautifully for holiday gift giving!
Here is the recipe – it contains 3 simple ingredients, and it is delicious! Note that you can also leave out the powdered milk, and instead of mixing it with water, use cow milk, rice milk, almond milk, or any other kind of milk.
This really is yummy – my hubby, who is a bit of a sweets connoisseur, actually said it was the best he’d ever tasted!
By the way, did you notice the really cute mug? My daughter, Kenna, made it!
For an added bit of character, include a small amount of cinnamon in your mix or add a drop of peppermint oil to your steaming mug. Now cuddle up next to the fire with a good book and enjoy!
- 4 Tbsp Powdered Milk We used Organic Valley, which worked great
- 3 Tbsp Sugar We used organic cane sugar, finely ground
- 2 Tbsp Cocoa powder We used organic baking cocoa
- The ingredients I used
- Put all ingredients together in the same bowl
- Mix together thoroughly
- The finished product
- Add your hot water and enjoy! (Use approximately 2 tablespoons per 6 oz. of water.)
